From Mike Kammerer:
Leo Duffy, who was a long time Des Moines AM Rotarian, passed away on August 27th in Champlin, Minnesota. Leo and Marilyn moved to Minneapolis a few years ago, but Leo remained a Rotarian and joined a club there. He battled cancer for a couple of years but remained active until the last few months. No service has been scheduled in Des Moines at this time.
For more than a decade, the Greater Des Moines Rotary Multi-Club Committee, branded as Rotary CIVITAS, has brought metro Des Moines Rotarians and their guests together to address important community issues. During the past four years, our focus has been human trafficking prevention, where our work has expanded beyond education to include direct investment in training, nonprofits, and community partnerships.
Rotary Civitas continues to make a meaningful impact in the fight against human trafficking. During the past two years, with our collective financial support, nationally recognized trainer Dan Nash has trained more than 200 professionals, mainly law enforcement officers, along with victim services nonprofit leaders, victim advocates, city and county attorneys, prosecutors, probation/parole officers, and healthcare providers working to prevent trafficking and support survivors. Over the past four years, Rotary Civitas has also provided financial support to local nonprofit organizations dedicated to human trafficking prevention.
Please see the attached infographic highlighting our work over the past four years and the collective impact Rotary has made in our community on this critical issue.
Looking ahead, our goal is to train 500 law enforcement officers and community partners by the 2028-2029 Rotary year through the continued support of the greater Des Moines Rotary Clubs. We are also pursuing grant funding to help expand these efforts.
As we focus our energy on achieving these training goals and planning for the future, the Civitas Committee will not hold an evening Civitas program during the 2026–2027 Rotary year. We remain committed to bringing our Rotary Clubs together around important community issues and are exploring future program topics.
Thank you to all of the metro Des Moines Rotary Clubs for your continued financial support and commitment to making our community a safer place for everyone. Our impact on human trafficking prevention is only due to the collective efforts of our Clubs working together.

CALLING ALL GOLFERS – 24th ANNUAL DMAM GOLF OUTING – 9/28 at 8:30 a.m. – Woodland Hills Golf Course!
Mark your calendars for Monday, September 28th at 8:30 a.m., as the date for the 24th Annual DMAM Golf Outing at Woodland Hills Golf Course south of Ankeny (“WHGC”).
WHGC is located about 5 minutes south of Ankeny off Highway 415. An excellent golf course with a nice patio for the post-golf lunch and awards ceremony. Golfers of ALL skill levels are encouraged to participate. It doesn’t matter if you’re a duffer or a pro – the goal is to have fun and share some of our famous DMAM camaraderie…so the more the merrier! Non-golfers welcome as well for the post-golf lunch social event, which should begin around 1:30 p.m. at the home of Charley Crowley and his much better half, Leah, who live off the 8th hole at WHGC.
Format for the 24th Annual DMAM Golf Outing is the same as last year - a morning scramble. Green fees at WHGC are $45, and you’ll pay online after I email out the pairings in early September. But don’t despair – golfers who want to play more golf after lunch can then play another round that afternoon for the replay rate of $25.
In keeping with tradition, the post-golf awards ceremony is always a festive affair with prizes awarded for the good, the bad and the ugly for menand women - long and short drive, long putt, closest to the pin, and more to be announced that day.
The beauty of this event is that you’ll be paired with fellow Rotarians you likely don’t know well. I have lists of the pairings from the past 5 years and strive to get you paired with a new group each year. There’s no better way to get to know more of your fellow DMAM Rotarians than this event! Our annual golf outing is also a great way for newer members to get to know others in the club…plus it’s a damn fun day!
We need to get a preliminary head count for golfers by Tuesday, September 1st... so if you're interested in joining us for a morning of Rotary fellowship on the links and post-golf lunch, please e-mail me back at jwc@nyemaster.comand include your GHIN handicap or estimated average score for 18 holes. I'll then put together the “scramble” teams and match them up so the approximate total handicap for each team's four golfers is as close as possible.
In keeping with tradition for prizes, if you have items you'd like to donate (golf balls, shirts, umbrellas, bags, hats, any other company swag), please contact me (515-283-8048 or jwc@nyemaster.com) to let us know if you can help us out with donated prizes. If you're playing in the event, just bring them with you on September 28th. Even if you're not able to play in the golf outing, it will be a great opportunity for you to market your company to your fellow Rotarians.
Hope to see you on September 28thth at WHGC for the 24th Annual DMAM Golf Outing – start practicing!

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Join us September 10th at Waveland golf course for the annual Isaiah 117 golf tournament. 9am shotgun start with lunch provided during the round. Register at linktree/isaiah117housepolkcountyia. Des Moines is in the process of setting up an Isaiah 117 home that provides a comforting home where children awaiting foster care placement can rest and reduce trauma. Contact Emily Raecker Adreon for additional information.
Reggie’s Sleepout: 9th Oct, 12pm onwards
This is an annual overnight fundraiser where participants sleep in cardboard structures at Drake Stadium to raise awareness and funds for homeless youth in Central Iowa. Now in its 20th year, the event honors Reggie Kelsey, whose death in 2001 after aging out of foster care without support sparked a movement that has since raised millions for kids who need it most.
Have a life skill that homeless youth can learn from? Over lunch and dinner there are opportunities to talk to the youth about housing, financial planning 101, solving legal difficulties, communication skills, dressing for success etc.
